This session is intended to support the development of supervisors and managers who may not have an HR background or who are new to managing others within their organization.  Supervisors and managers play a significant role in shaping the workplace culture and supporting the governance objectives of their community. Participants will be provided with an overview of a First Nation's accountability as an employer under both Federal and Provincial employment-related legislation.  For elected leaders who may be new to this role, the session will also provide some best practices for providing leadership in the oversight of the HR function.

Often, when we talk about mental health we tend to focus the discussions around disorders and mental health problems.  While it is important to understand and talk about mental disorders and mental health problems, it does not quite provide a full picture of what mental health is.  This session will focus on what you can do on a day to day basis to support your staff's mental health.  Participants will also learn how accommodations and having difficult conversations can support both the employees and managers in your organization. Topics will include:
  • Enhance knowledge and understanding of mental health and relevance to the workplace, signs, and symptoms of poor mental health
  • Build confidence to be able to assist a colleague, friend, or family member
  • Decrease the stigma of poor mental health at the workplace
  • Learn effective strategies to maintain your own positive sense of wellbeing
